In 2022, I created Wall, a photorealistic generative study of a brick wall in Austin, Texas. This was an intricate study of not just one single image, but all of the processes, patterns, and randomness that combined to shape all of the details in and on the wall.

With any work I create, the output format is always a key consideration. Although I often work with prints on paper, the unique nature of this work led me to consider alternative printing surfaces. I’ve always loved the richness and variety of tones and textures that you can find in concrete. Those qualities remind me of all of the detailed observations I made of materials while creating Wall. For that reason, I chose to create an experimental set of 30 prints of Wall on composite concrete boards.

Each concrete board brings its own unique character, with particular shades of gray, splatters, scuffs, and chips. These alone would make each print distinct. However, I also wanted to work the surface of each print by hand, using a variety of tools. The original wall that served as the inspiration and reference for Wall was itself scraped and marked by the hands that constructed it, tagged it, cleaned it, or accidentally bumped against it while passing by. Those unpredictable events are part of the rich process that made the wall what it is, and made it interesting to study. It felt fitting to use my own hands to contribute unique marks to each of the prints as well. As a result, every print has something different to show, and they are all separated by so many small moments of randomness in the history of their creation.

These limited prints on concrete are available for owners of the original Wall to purchase. See below for details.

Print Specifications

  • The Wall concrete print is a generative design printed on composite concrete and hand-distressed by Tyler Hobbs. Due to the natural variation in the concrete, and the differences in the distressing process, each print is unique.

  • Prints come framed in a custom welded steel frame with a cleat for mounting.

  • The dimensions of the framed prints are 22 x 15 x 1.5 inches (56 x 38 x 3.8 cm).

  • Each print is signed, dated, and numbered by Tyler Hobbs.

  • A Certificate of Authenticity accompanies the print, which includes an NFC chip. This chip controls an NFT that represents the certified ownership of the physical work and must accompany all future sales. This NFT is not for sale as a standalone item.

  • The price of a print is 1.5 ETH.
