Two Lovers, in Structure, is a hand-painted mural located in the Toranomon business district of Minato, Tokyo. At 50 feet high x 34 feet wide (15.24 m x 10.36 m), the shape of the building naturally divides the composition into two sections.

I chose to think of each of these two sections as characters - and eventually, as lovers. They are in relation to each other and have a conversation with each other. The character on the left is bold and structured, while the character on the right is softer, gentler, and more open. This is a dynamic that we also find in many human relationships.

With a restriction of only being allowed to cover 1/3 of the surface area, I created the design to feel as if the entire building was used. I constructed the algorithm to specify the location, size, and color of every circle. While there are very particular kinds of patterns and organization that the computer encourages, I also wanted this work to have a human touch. Each circle is hand-painted in a unique way. The variation and imperfection from using the hand is important for making the work feel approachable and relatable.
